Your Speech Therapy Questions Answered: NDIS, Online & Kids' Milestones

We get asked a lot of great questions about speech therapy, from how speech therapy works online to when to be concerned about a child’s development. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive, with answers straight from our team of speech pathologists.

Getting Started: NDIS Speech Therapy, Medicare & Wait Times

Are you NDIS friendly?

Q: Are you NDIS friendly?

A: Yes, we’re NDIS registered and can provide supports with NDIS funding. As providers of ndis speech therapy, we are NDIS registered and would love to support your child with speech.

Can we utilise Medicare referrals?

Q: Can we utilise Medicare referrals?

A: Yes, we accept Medicare referrals. You’ll just need to double-check with your doctor that speech therapy is included in your plan. One of our experienced speech therapists can chat to you about the process in a free discovery call.

You can also read our blog on Big Changes to Medicare Plans: What Families Need to Know or list to our podcast Is Speech Therapy Covered by Medicare for the latest tips on how Medicare for speech therapy works.

Q: We've been on a waitlist for over two years. What are your wait times like?

A: It breaks our heart that families are having to wait that long. We work to get speech therapy sessions started in 3 weeks (if not sooner!). This can vary depending on how flexible a family can be (for example we have immediate availability for speech therapy sessions during the day). Typically, we can get families seeing a speech pathologist in 2-3 weeks.

Speech Therapy for Kids: Ages & Milestones

At what age do we need to be concerned?

Q: At what age do we need to be concerned?

A: Great question! Every child develops at their own pace, but there are certain speech and language milestones to keep an eye on. When considering childrens speech therapy, here are some flags for typically developing children:

  • 2-3 year old flags would be not asking questions, being unable to use a four-word sentence, or following a two-part instruction (e.g., “get your water bottle and put it in the bag”).
  • 4-5 year old flags would be struggling with learning letter names, sounding out words, or forming sentences.

We highly recommend reviewing Speech Pathology Australia’s communication milestones here for the latest information and more child development flags.

If you want to talk through specific examples, you can have a chat with one of our speech pathologists by booking a free discovery call.

Q: My 3-year-old grandson doesn't say his sounds correctly and I can't understand him. How can I best help him?

A: There can be lots of reasons why children don’t speak clearly. A speech assessment would likely be the best option to look at. If you would like to book a free 15-min phone call to speak directly with one of our speech therapists, you can choose a time that suits you.

About Online Speech Therapy: Telehealth, Autism & ADHD

What about with autistic+ ADHD children who won't sit still and will fight to run away from the monitor?

Q: What about with autistic+ ADHD children who won't sit still and will fight to run away from the monitor?

A: We tailor our online speech therapy sessions to be a topic the child LOVES and wants to take part in to keep them engaged and learning. We support lots of neurodivergent individuals and spend time investing in engagement in telehealth training for our speech pathologists to identify the best strategies.

Q: If the kids are in their own house, they just want to play with their own stuff. Isn't face-to-face better?

A: That’s actually the best part! Our speech therapy sessions adapt to using the child’s own toys and household to turn “normal” activities into reaching speech therapy goals.
