What if we told you that those humble boiled eggs and backyard bunny games could be doing double duty?
At Pop, we’re not just here for the speech milestones and phoneme finesse—we’re also parents, professionals, and playtime pioneers. With over 60 speech therapists available via video calls across Australia, we know how to turn even the silliest school holiday moments into meaningful learning.
This Easter, our team of speechies put a new spin on the classics you already love. Think egg and spoon races that target tricky speech sounds, Easter egg painting with a storytelling twist, and hunts that spark grammar growth. Let’s dig in!
1. Painting Easter Eggs 🥚
Gather your paints, your hard-boiled eggs (or ping pong ball stand-ins), and your creativity.
Our therapists suggest painting pictures or emoji faces that represent emotions, then talking about them. Try:
😡 “This one’s angry. Why do you think he’s mad?”
🐶 “Let’s paint a dog. What’s the dog’s story?”
You can also target specific sounds. Got a goal word that starts with “s”? Paint a sun, a snake, or a sandwich, and build vocabulary while you decorate.
🖌️ Pro tip: Add characters to each egg and build a story together once they’re dry. (A troll? A castle? A skateboard? You’ve got a tale waiting to happen.)

2. The Egg and Spoon Race 🥄
Sure, it’s all laughs and wobbles on the outside, but inside? This classic race is a goldmine for speech goals.

How to Play
Set up an obstacle course in your backyard or lounge. Each cone can have a different task:
- Say a speech sound five times
- Name an emotion
- Use an irregular past tense verb in a sentence
Kids stop at each cone, complete the task, and keep racing. It’s competition, coordination, and communication all in one.
Add a twist: Make it a relay! Kids love the teamwork and get more chances to repeat goals.
3. Easter Egg Hunt
This isn’t your average dash-and-grab hunt, plus it’s suitable for all ages.
Instead, hide eggs with a little extra on them:
- Target words for speech practice
- One word per egg that forms a sentence when all are found
- Characters or prompt words to spark a story
Plastic, ping pong, or painted—the egg doesn’t matter. You can even search for Fillable Easter Eggs and change up the activity each time you play!
Another way to play is by using the eggs as a matching game – think about matching rhyming words, matching lowercase and uppercase letters, or making words.
4. Finger Puppets 🖐️
Making Easter finger puppets? It’s not just arts and crafts—it’s speech practice in disguise.
Kids love ‘talking in character.’ That makes it easier to:
- Practice tricky sentence structures
- Use new vocabulary
- Explore emotions in a safe, fun way
Have a fussy eater? Characters can also be used during food play to create a safe ‘barrier’ between your child and a non-preferred food.
5. Chick Races 🐔
Wind-up chicks or bunny races are also a low-cost option for all ages. Here are different ways to run this activity based on the number of players:
1 or more players: Put speech sound cards in a line and practice the ones the wind-up toy lands on.
2 or more players: Race two toys, and the winner of the race gets to pick the target sound to practice.

6. Digital Easter Delights 🎮
Not every holiday activity needs glitter and glue. Our speech therapists also recommend:
