If your child’s words ever seem to get “stuck,” or if you’ve noticed them repeating sounds like a skipping record, you are not alone. Stuttering (sometimes called stammering) is a physical communication style where the flow of speech is interrupted by repetitions, prolongations, or blocks.
As a parent, your first thought is likely: “How can I help my child feel confident when they speak?” This is where speech pathologists (also known as speech therapists) step in.
The best news for Aussie families? As of 1 March 2026, the Australian government has expanded Medicare rebates for individuals under 25 who are suspected of having a stutter. This means your journey toward support just became much more affordable.

Understanding Speech Therapy for Stuttering
Stuttering is more than just a “tangled tongue.” It is a neurobiological condition that affects the timing and coordination of speech muscles. In Australia, we lean into a neuroaffirming approach – recognising that while a stutter might be a part of how a child speaks, it shouldn’t be a barrier to who they are.
Speech pathologists are university-trained allied health professionals who support the management of a stutter. They aren’t just looking at the mouth; they are looking at the whole child. Their goal is to improve quality of life and social goals, such as:
- Reducing the physical tension during “bumpy” speech.
- Building resilience against bullying or social anxiety.
- Ensuring the child feels empowered to participate in class or at birthday parties.
Signs Parents Can look for
You might notice signs during everyday moments – at the dinner table or while they’re telling you about their day. Look for:
- Repetitions: Saying “b-b-b-ball” or “I-I-I want.”
- Prolongations: Stretching a sound out, like “Sssssss-sam.”
- Blocks: When the breath or sound stops completely for a few seconds.
- Physical tension: Seeing your child squint their eyes or tighten their jaw to “push” a word out.
Diagnosis of Stuttering
Speech pathologists are the primary professional for conducting a stuttering speech assessment. While a GP or a Paediatrician might refer you, the speech pathologist conducts the clinical assessment to determine the severity of the stutter and to make a recommendation as to the most appropriate therapy program to each individual.
Treatment of Stuttering
Speech therapy for stuttering often involves evidence-based programs tailored to your child’s age. Online speech therapy has become a game-changer here, allowing kids to practice in their “natural habitat” – at home where they feel safest.
Sometimes, other professionals help too! An Occupational Therapist might assist if there are sensory processing needs, or a Psychologist might jump in if a child is feeling particularly anxious about their speech.
How to Receive Medicare Funding for Stuttering
Navigating the Medicare Benefit Scheme (MBS) used to be a bit of a maze, but the rules have changed for the better. From 1 March 2026, Stuttering has been added to the “Diagnosis & Treatment for Eligible Disabilities” list.
If you are looking for child speech therapy Australia, here is the breakdown of the funding you can access:
- Rebate Amount: $87.25 per session.
- Assessment Phase: You can access a maximum of 8 sessions for diagnosis/assessment over a lifetime (max 4 per discipline).
- Treatment Phase: You can receive a maximum of 20 treatment sessions in total.
- The Process: These 20 sessions are usually released in two blocks of 10. You’ll see your Speech Pathologist for the first 10, then pop back to your GP for a quick review to unlock the next 10.
This is a significant win for kids speech therapy, making long-term support sustainable for families.
Ask for Support Receiving Medicare Funding
In short: Stuttering is a unique way of speaking that deserves support, not stigma. With the 2026 Medicare changes, Aussie families can now access significant rebates for both assessment and treatment. A speech pathologist is your best partner in helping your child find their flow and their confidence.
At Pop Online Speech Therapy, we want to make this process as easy as a Sunday morning. A Pop speech pathologist can support your GP visit by providing a formal letter outlining:
- A recommendation for the diagnosis of a suspected eligible disability (like stuttering).
- The specific MBS item numbers your GP needs to use so you can claim your rebates via video telehealth speech pathology services.
